Kraken at a glance: 9.05/10 in July 2026
Kraken, headquartered in United States — one of a handful of exchanges with a decade-plus operating history scores 9.05/10 on our seven-criterion composite. Its clear strength is liquidity (10/10) — coingecko trust score of 10/10 — verified deep order books, tight bid-ask spreads on major pairs, and reported volume that matches on-chain settlement. The main deduction comes from fees (7/10) — a real factor to weigh, not a rounding issue. On the seven-criterion methodology used across our exchange coverage, it currently leads our composite ranking, ahead of Coinbase Exchange and Binance.
Every score below is derived from CoinGecko public API data (liquidity, volume, longevity, coin coverage) or our editorial regulatory-and-transparency lookup file, which we review quarterly. No score on this page is influenced by affiliate deals, referral programs, or commercial relationships — Kraken cannot pay for a better ranking, and we do not receive commission for external clicks.
Liquidity and execution quality
CoinGecko Trust Score of 10/10 — verified deep order books, tight bid-ask spreads on major pairs, and reported volume that matches on-chain settlement.
24-hour volume of 15.2K BTC — top 25% of exchanges. Strong active trading.
This is a top-tier liquidity venue. Orders up to mid-six-figures on major pairs execute at or near the mid-price without material impact. For traders comparing venues, effective execution cost is a combination of headline fees plus realised spread — a slightly higher fee at a deeper-book venue often nets cheaper total cost than a low-fee venue with wider spreads.
Regulatory standing and jurisdiction risk
US FinCEN-registered MSB; state money transmitter licenses in most US states. Wyoming Special Purpose Depository Institution charter (2020) — bank-level regulatory status. UK FCA-registered cryptoasset firm. Australia AUSTRAC. EU: MiCA-compliant via Ireland.
Regulatory posture is best-in-class. Kraken operates under formal licensing in the US, EU (via MiCA passporting), UK, and other tier-1 jurisdictions. This constrains what products can be offered but materially reduces the risk of a sudden regulatory shutdown or forced exit from a major market.
Regulation matters for two reasons users often underweight. First, if the exchange is forced to exit your jurisdiction, you may have limited time to withdraw funds — a scenario that has played out multiple times since 2023 as MiCA, the UK FCA regime, and US enforcement have all tightened. Second, in a bankruptcy or fraud scenario (see FTX 2022), the presence of a real regulator with subpoena power and receivership authority is what enables meaningful asset recovery.
Transparency, audits, and security track record
Semi-annual Proof-of-Reserves attestation by third-party accounting firm (Armanino, then BitGo). Never suffered a hack in 12+ years of operation. Only major CEX to have published full liability data alongside PoR.
Kraken's operational history is one of the longest in the sector. Surviving the 2018 bear market, the 2020 COVID liquidity crisis, the 2022 FTX contagion, and every major regulatory shift without customer losses is a meaningful signal — few exchanges have been continuously operational through all four.
Combined with the transparency posture above, this is a low-tail-risk configuration for CEX exposure. Actual custody of large long-term holdings should still be in self-custody — no exchange, however well-regulated and audited, is a substitute for a hardware wallet for coins you do not plan to trade.
Fee structure in peer context
Kraken Pro: 0.40% / 0.25% base; volume tiers down to 0.10% / 0.00% at $10M+ monthly volume. Kraken.com simple interface has higher spread-based fees (avoid for larger orders).
Fees are competitive without being category-leading. Binance and OKX offer materially lower headline fees for the same execution quality. Whether it matters depends on your monthly volume.
A quick sanity check: on 100 spot trades of $10,000 monthly, a 0.10% fee costs $1,200 per year; a 0.40% fee costs $4,800. If you are trading that volume, fees justify meaningful attention. Below that, execution quality and custody assurance dominate.
Product breadth and coin selection
Wide selection covering major and mid-cap assets. Exact listing count varies; refer to the exchange's current market list for the precise pair set.
In the current market cycle, exchange product breadth extends beyond spot trading into perpetual futures, options, structured yield products, and (for some venues) tokenised real-world assets. Users prioritising a single account for all of these should compare full product menus rather than spot listings alone.
Who Kraken is for — and who should look elsewhere
Best fit: Institutional accounts, US-based traders, and anyone prioritising regulatory compliance over the lowest possible fees.
Look elsewhere if: Kraken suits nearly all mainstream use cases within its regulatory perimeter — only edge-case needs (e.g. specific altcoin-only listings) are likely to push you elsewhere.
Kraken currently leads our composite ranking. Users specifically prioritising lower fees may still find better options at higher-fee-tier competitors; users specifically prioritising regulatory reach have limited superior options in this category.
