Ledger Nano X at a glance: 8.35/10 in July 2026
Ledger Nano X is a hardware wallet for storing and managing cryptocurrency. On our six-criterion composite for wallets, it ranks below Safe (Gnosis Safe) and Trezor Safe 5 while sitting above Coinbase Wallet and Keplr in our current composite.
Wallet scoring weights security most heavily (30%) — for anything holding meaningful capital, security dominates other considerations. Chain support, UX, open-source posture, reputation, and price/accessibility fill out the picture.
Security model
Secure Element chip (EAL5+), open-source apps but proprietary firmware. Industry-standard hardware wallet used by millions. Multi-signature support via Ledger Live.
Security is the foundation of every wallet decision. Hardware wallets keep private keys offline in a secure element, protected against malware on your device. Software wallets are convenient but keep keys in memory — vulnerable to compromised devices. For anything above a small trading balance, hardware wallet storage is standard practice.
Chain support and multichain UX
Supports 5,500+ tokens across 100+ blockchains — the broadest chain coverage of any hardware wallet. Native support for Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and every major L1/L2.
Chain coverage determines which networks you can access from a single wallet. Multichain wallets simplify DeFi participation across many networks but require careful attention to which chain you're currently interacting with — sending to the wrong chain is one of the most common ways to lose funds permanently.
User experience
Ledger Live app is polished on desktop and mobile. Bluetooth support on Nano X removes the cable requirement. Setup is guided and beginner-friendly.
Wallet UX shapes daily usage. Great UX (transaction previews, clear dApp connection prompts, mobile-desktop sync) prevents user errors that cost real money. Rough UX increases the risk of signing something you didn't mean to sign.
Open source and auditability
Ledger apps are open-source; core firmware is proprietary. Some users prefer fully-open alternatives (Trezor) for auditability.
Open-source wallets can be independently audited by security researchers, and vulnerabilities can be discovered and patched by the community. Closed-source wallets require trust in the vendor's internal security process. For maximum-security setups, open-source is the safer bet.
Reputation and track record
Founded 2014, largest hardware wallet company by units sold. Suffered marketing database breach 2020 exposing customer info (not wallets); has since improved security posture. 2023 Ledger Recover controversy raised concerns about firmware direction, addressed with opt-in confirmation.
Wallet reputation is built over years of clean operation. Well-established wallets with millions of users and no history of user losses are safer defaults than new entrants, however clever their design.
Who Ledger Nano X is for — and who should look elsewhere
Best fit: Long-term crypto holders storing significant capital — the gold-standard cold storage solution for anyone with meaningful holdings.
Look elsewhere if: Ledger Nano X is less suitable for users whose primary priority is open source.
Direct alternatives worth comparing: Safe (Gnosis Safe) and Trezor Safe 5 score higher on our composite. See the full Best Crypto Wallets ranking.
