What Phantom is in 2026
Phantom launched in 2021 as a Solana-only wallet and grew into the most-installed Solana wallet by a wide margin. The 2023–2024 expansion into Ethereum, Polygon, Base, Sui, and Bitcoin Ordinals made Phantom one of the most-used multi-chain consumer wallets globally. In April 2026, Coinbase acquired Phantom for $1.8B.
Solana experience
Phantom is the default Solana wallet for most users. Native staking, NFT viewing, DeFi protocol support, and a clean, mobile-first UX. The built-in swap aggregator routes trades across Jupiter, Raydium, and other Solana DEXes for best execution.
Multi-chain expansion
Adding Ethereum, Base, and Polygon brought EVM dApp support into Phantom. The wallet handles each chain natively without bridge-wrapping. Bitcoin Ordinals support (added 2024) gives users access to inscription-based assets without separate wallet software.
Coinbase acquisition
The April 2026 acquisition by Coinbase ($1.8B) raised some user concerns about long-term direction. Phantom leadership has committed to maintaining the non-custodial design — your seed phrase remains client-side, no KYC is required by default. The acquisition gives Phantom Coinbase distribution; the operational direction remains independent for now.
Who Phantom fits
Solana-first users. Multi-chain users wanting one polished consumer wallet. Mobile-first crypto users. Less suitable for users wanting fully open-source code (consider Backpack) or maximum Ethereum DeFi integration (MetaMask or Rabby).
