Babylon Protocol is the underlying BTC staking primitive. It allows BTC to be time-locked on the Bitcoin blockchain itself — using Bitcoin script — and mapped to a corresponding stake on a PoS chain. There is no bridge involved: the BTC never leaves Bitcoin L1.
A user deposits BTC through the Lombard interface. Lombard routes the BTC into a Babylon staking transaction on the Bitcoin blockchain, locking it for the chosen period.
The locked BTC secures a PoS chain. In return, the Bitcoin holder earns staking rewards from that PoS chain.
Lombard mints LBTC 1:1 against the staked BTC. LBTC is a liquid ERC-20 token on Ethereum (and other EVM chains) that represents the staked position.
LBTC can be used in DeFi: supplied as collateral on Aave, deposited in Pendle yield-splitting pools, used as LP liquidity, or simply held to accrue staking rewards over time.
When the user wants to exit, they redeem LBTC for BTC. The BTC unstaking period is subject to Babylon’s unbonding timelock, typically days to weeks depending on the PoS chain parameters.
The design is trustless in a specific sense: the BTC is locked by Bitcoin script and the slashing conditions are enforced by the Babylon protocol contracts, not by Lombard itself. Lombard acts as the front-end coordination and minting layer.
LBTC: the Bitcoin liquid staking token
LBTC is the yield-bearing BTC derivative issued by Lombard. One LBTC represents one staked BTC position. Its key properties:
Yield accrual. LBTC holders earn BTC staking rewards from Babylon. Rewards are distributed over time, gradually increasing the redemption rate of LBTC to BTC.
DeFi composability. LBTC is an ERC-20, so any DeFi protocol that accepts ERC-20 tokens can in principle integrate it. Aave, Morpho, and Pendle have live LBTC integrations as of 2025.
Cross-chain. Lombard has launched LBTC on multiple EVM chains including Ethereum and BNB Chain. The cross-chain supply is backed by a unified set of BTC positions on Babylon.
Non-rebasing. LBTC does not rebase. Instead, the exchange rate between LBTC and BTC appreciates over time as staking rewards accrue, similar to wstETH vs stETH.
Custodial risk profile. LBTC minting requires trusting the Lombard smart contracts and the Babylon bridge to Ethereum. This is not a fully trustless BTC bridge — it is a staking coordination layer.

BARD is the governance token of the Lombard DAO. It was distributed in 2024 through a combination of community airdrop, ecosystem incentives, and investor allocations with vesting schedules.

Protocol immaturity. Babylon mainnet and Lombard are both early-stage. Staking parameters, slashing conditions, and security assumptions are still being proven in production.
Slashing risk for LBTC. If a validator backed by Lombard’s BTC stake gets slashed on a Babylon consumer chain, LBTC could trade at a discount to BTC. BARD value is linked to LBTC market confidence.
Bridge and minting risk. LBTC requires cross-chain infrastructure between Bitcoin and EVM chains. Smart-contract bugs in the minting or bridging contracts could affect LBTC and BARD.
