What are liquid staking protocols?
Liquid staking protocols (LSPs) let users stake ETH and receive a tradeable receipt token (LST) that appreciates with staking rewards while remaining usable in DeFi. Category leaders include Lido (dominant stETH issuer), Rocket Pool (most decentralized validator model), and Coinbase Wrapped Staked ETH (CEX-issued).
Top-scored liquid staking protocols in July 2026
The three highest-scoring liquid staking protocols on our composite methodology this month:
1. Lido — 9.10/10
Users prioritising liquidity and battle-tested track record — the LST is widely accepted as collateral across DeFi.
ETH holders prioritising validator decentralisation — the operator set is permissionless or near-permissionless.
Multi-chain stakers who want the same liquid staking token available across L1s and L2s.
How to choose the right liquid staking protocol
For maximum liquidity and DeFi acceptance, Lido is the default — stETH is deeply integrated across Aave, Curve, Uniswap V3, and dozens of other protocols. For validator decentralization (permissionless operator model), Rocket Pool is the reference implementation. Users who prefer CEX-adjacent custody use Coinbase's cbETH.
What can go wrong
LSPs carry smart contract risk, validator slashing risk, and depeg risk. The 2022 stETH depeg (to ~0.94 ETH briefly) showed that LSTs can trade below underlying during stress events, though never permanently. Ethereum's Shanghai upgrade (2023) enabled withdrawals and largely eliminated the structural depeg risk.
How we score liquid staking protocols
Liquid staking protocols are scored on six criteria — TVL, protocol age, category leadership, chain coverage, 7-day momentum (all from DefiLlama), plus a validator-decentralisation score from our editorial lookup. No affiliate arrangement influences the ranking.
The criteria
TVL (weight: 30%)
Percentile vs top-10 in category. Source: DefiLlama /protocols.
Battle-tested (weight: 20%)
Years since protocol launch. Source: DefiLlama + editorial lookup.
Category leadership (weight: 15%)
Rank within Liquid Staking category. Source: DefiLlama /protocols.
Chain coverage (weight: 15%)
Number of chains deployed. Source: DefiLlama /protocols.
Momentum (weight: 10%)
7-day TVL change bucketed. Source: DefiLlama /protocols.
Decentralization (weight: 10%)
Validator operator model (permissionless > curated > single). Source: Editorial lookup.
