What is USD.AI?

USD.AI is a synthetic dollar protocol that backs its USDai stablecoin with revenue from AI compute infrastructure rather than with cash, Treasuries, or a derivatives basis trade. The system tokenizes the cash flow generated by GPUs, data centers, and other physical compute hardware deployed across DePIN (decentralized physical infrastructure) networks, and channels that yield to USDai holders. CHIP is the native governance and utility token that coordinates the protocol, secures underwriting, and captures a share of the upside as the AI economy scales.

The pitch is straightforward. What moves CHIP on any given day:

• USDai supply growth. Every dollar of USDai minted requires CHIP-backed underwriting and routes a share of compute revenue through the protocol. Faster supply growth tightens the long-term thesis around CHIP.
• AI compute demand cycles. GPU rental rates on networks like Akash, io.net, Render, and Aethir set the underlying yield. A surge in AI training demand lifts compute prices and protocol revenue. A glut of new H100s in the secondary market does the opposite.
• DePIN integrations. New partnerships with hardware providers, data-center operators, and AI model labs expand the collateral base. Each integration is read as a validation point.
• CHIP unlock schedule. Like most early-stage tokens, CHIP has multi-year unlocks for the team, investors, and the foundation. Unlock cliffs add sell-side supply on a public schedule.

How USDai stays at $1: AI compute as collateral

USDai is not backed by a dollar in a bank account, and it is not backed by a delta-neutral derivatives position either. Each USDai is backed by tokenized claims on revenue-producing AI compute hardware: GPUs deployed in colocation facilities, data-center capacity rented out by minute or hour, and recurring contracts with AI labs and inference providers. The protocol underwrites those cash flows and mints USDai against them, with overcollateralization buffers to absorb downtime, depreciation, and short-term price swings in compute rates.

A simplified mint flow:

1. A whitelisted compute operator pledges hardware (GPU clusters, data-center racks, or DePIN node revenue rights) into a USD.AI vault.
2. Underwriters running CHIP-backed validators score the pledge using on-chain attestations, telemetry, and historical revenue data.
3. USDai is minted at a discount to the pledged value, leaving a buffer that absorbs rate volatility and operational shortfalls.
4. Compute revenue flows back to the protocol on a streaming basis and is split between USDai yield, the reserve fund, and CHIP stakers.

On the way out, the operator can repay USDai to redeem the pledged hardware claim, or the position can be liquidated through Dutch auctions if revenue underperforms its underwriting target. A reserve fund, visible on-chain, sits behind the system and is the first line of defense when individual operators miss revenue targets. It is the closest analog to a bank loan-loss reserve, but for compute-backed lending.

CHIP tokenomics and governance

CHIP is the coordination layer of USD.AI. The token does three things at once: it secures underwriting through staking, it pays out a share of protocol revenue, and it controls governance over collateral types, risk parameters, and partnerships. That triple role is intentional. The team has talked about CHIP as the equity layer of an AI-native bond market, and the design borrows from how MakerDAO and Aave have set up their respective governance tokens.

• Staking. CHIP holders can stake the token to back underwriters and earn a share of fees from minting and redemption. Stake is slashable if an underwriter approves a pledge that defaults.
• Revenue share. A portion of net protocol revenue (the spread between AI compute yield and USDai yield) is paid to CHIP stakers, similar to how Aave routes fees back to AAVE holders.
• Governance. CHIP votes set whitelisted hardware types, target loan-to-value ratios, reserve fund top-ups, and which DePIN networks count as eligible collateral.
• Supply schedule. Total supply is capped, with multi-year unlocks for team, investors, and ecosystem incentives. Public unlock dates let traders price in upcoming dilution.

For an early-stage protocol the unlock schedule is one of the most important things to track. Token emissions outpacing revenue growth is the failure mode that has hurt almost every comparable governance token over the last cycle.

USDai yield: how AI compute revenue reaches the holder

USDai is designed to be yield-bearing, similar in spirit to sUSDe or sDAI but with a very different income source. The protocol earns a spread between two rates: what AI compute renters pay for GPUs and data-center capacity, and what USDai holders are paid for taking that exposure. The gap is the protocol margin, and a portion of it flows back to the holder through a staked variant of USDai.

Yield comes from three streams:

• GPU rental revenue. Hourly or per-minute fees on networks like Akash, io.net, Render, and Aethir, plus direct enterprise contracts.
• Inference contracts. Recurring revenue from AI labs and inference providers running models on the underlying hardware.
• Cash buffer yield. The protocol’s cash and Treasury reserves earn a short-term rate similar to BUIDL or Ondo OUSG.

The catch is that AI compute prices are not stable. GPU rental rates have swung sharply over the last two cycles as new H100 and H200 capacity came online and as demand from large model training campaigns ebbed and flowed. Headline USDai APY moves with that cycle. Holders should treat the rate as a variable, not a fixed coupon.

USD.AI vs Ethena vs MakerDAO: three takes on a synthetic dollar

USDai, USDe, and DAI all target a 1:1 dollar peg, but the engine behind each is completely different. The contrast is useful for sizing risk.

• Issuer: USDai is issued by USD.AI through whitelisted compute operators and CHIP-staked underwriters. Ethena (ENA) issues USDe through a delta-neutral basis trade on perpetual futures. MakerDAO/Sky issues DAI from overcollateralized vaults of crypto, USDC, and tokenized Treasuries.
• Reserves: USDai is backed by tokenized AI compute revenue plus a cash buffer and a reserve fund. USDe is backed by long staked ETH/BTC plus equal short perpetuals. DAI is backed by overcollateralized crypto and Real-World Asset vaults.
• Yield model: USDai pays the spread between compute revenue and USDai yield. USDe pays staking yield plus perpetual funding through sUSDe. DAI pays the DAI Savings Rate set by Sky governance.
• Stress scenario: USDai weakens if AI compute rates collapse for an extended period. USDe weakens if perpetual funding stays negative for too long. DAI depends on its underlying collateral, which has historically been heavy in USDC.
• Track record: USDai is the newest and the only one tied to off-chain hardware revenue. USDe has roughly two years live. DAI has been around since 2017 and is the most battle-tested of the three.

USD.AI is the only protocol of the three that bridges DePIN cash flow into a tokenized dollar. That is the entire reason the project exists, and it is also why the risk profile does not look like anything that came before it.

How to buy and use USD.AI (CHIP)

There are two related but separate things people mean when they say "buy USD.AI". The CHIP token trades on the venues that have listed it. USDai is minted and managed through the USD.AI app and held as a stablecoin, not bought as a separate ticker.

2. Complete KYC and fund the account. Bank rails (ACH, SEPA) are cheapest but take 1 to 3 business days. Cards are instant but cost 2 to 4%. Stablecoin deposits (USDC, USDT) settle in minutes.
3. Place the order. A market order fills at spot. A limit order sets your maximum buy price. For CHIP specifically, splitting larger orders across an hour reduces slippage given the still-thin order book.
4. For USDai, use the official USD.AI app. Connect a wallet, swap into USDai, and stake into the yield-bearing variant if you want exposure to compute revenue rather than just a flat dollar.
5. Move CHIP into self-custody for long-term holding. Hardware wallets (Ledger, Trezor) and reputable software wallets (MetaMask, Rabby) all support standard ERC-20 and SPL tokens depending on the chain CHIP settles on. Funds left on an exchange remain at exchange custody risk.

Risks of holding USD.AI

USD.AI sits at the intersection of stablecoins, DePIN, and AI infrastructure, which means it inherits risks from all three sectors. The risks worth understanding before sizing a position:

• Compute price risk. The whole model depends on GPU rental rates and AI inference contracts staying high enough to cover protocol obligations. A long stretch of declining compute prices compresses USDai yield and, in a worst case, eats into the reserve fund.
• Operator counterparty risk. Hardware pledges sit with real-world data-center operators and DePIN node providers. If an operator goes offline, gets seized, or fails to deliver promised capacity, the matching collateral leg is exposed until the position can be liquidated.
• CHIP unlock pressure. Multi-year unlocks for team, investors, and the foundation drip new supply onto the market on a public schedule. Around larger unlock cliffs, sell pressure can outweigh buy demand, especially while liquidity is still building.
• Regulatory exposure. Yield-bearing stablecoins backed by tokenized real-world cash flows sit in an unsettled regulatory bucket. EU MiCA, US stablecoin proposals, and securities-law treatment of tokenized hardware revenue are all moving targets that could force structural changes.
• Smart-contract and oracle risk. The mint, redeem, and revenue-distribution contracts have been audited, but no audit eliminates risk. Oracles for compute rates and operator telemetry are a new category of attack surface that does not have the years of stress testing that price oracles do.
• Liquidity risk on CHIP itself. Order books are thinner than for top-100 assets. Exiting a large position on bad news can move the market several percent before it fills.
