US and EU users who prioritise a spotless security record — no major hack since 2011 — and want a serious pro-grade trading terminal.
Institutions and funds requiring an SEC-registered venue with segregated qualified custody and audited on-chain reserves.
Active spot traders chasing the deepest global liquidity and the widest listing catalogue outside the US perimeter.
Traders who mix spot and on-chain — the Web3 wallet, DEX aggregator and Ethereum L2 X Layer sit inside the same account as CEX pairs.
Long-horizon EU holders who want the oldest continuously-operating exchange (2011) with conservative listings and full MiCA licensing.
Derivatives-first traders who want tighter perp funding and a maker-friendly fee schedule; accept offshore regulatory footprint.

Optimism (OP) is a leading Ethereum Layer-2 optimistic rollup and the token of the Optimism Collective, the governance and stewardship body behind the Optimism ecosystem. Launched in December 2021, Optimism was one of the first two major optimistic rollups (alongside Arbitrum) to bring Ethereum-security-inheriting scale to production. The OP Stack — Optimism's open-source rollup framework — has since been adopted by dozens of chains including Base (Coinbase's L2), Zora, Mode, Fraxtal, Redstone, and many others.
In 2026, Optimism's core positioning is the Superchain: a shared infrastructure fabric where multiple OP Stack-based chains share sequencing, liquidity, and messaging while maintaining independent execution. Base is by far the largest Superchain member by TVL and activity, followed by OP Mainnet itself, then various application-specific and consumer-focused chains.
OP sits consistently in the top-40 cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation. Value accrual to the OP token has been slower to materialise than some early holders hoped — Superchain revenue sharing is progressive rather than automatic, and Base's success has grown Ethereum's L2 economy more than OP's direct token value.
Optimism is an optimistic rollup: it executes transactions off-chain, batches them, and posts compressed transaction data back to Ethereum L1 for security. The "optimistic" part refers to the fraud-proof mechanism — Optimism assumes transactions are valid unless someone submits a fraud proof within a challenge window (currently 7 days). During the challenge window, transactions can technically be reversed if a fraud proof succeeds, though this has never happened in production.
The result is that end-user transaction finality on the L2 is achieved in seconds, but withdrawal from L2 back to L1 takes 7 days due to the challenge window (unless users route through liquidity-based bridges that pay the challenge window in exchange for immediate liquidity). This is the main UX friction of optimistic rollups compared to zk-rollups (which have shorter withdrawal times but different tradeoffs).
Transaction fees on Optimism are typically well under $0.01 for simple transfers and $0.05-0.20 for complex DeFi transactions. EIP-4844 blob transactions (introduced in Ethereum's Dencun upgrade in March 2024) dramatically reduced L2 data-availability costs. The upcoming Glamsterdam upgrade (H2 2026) will further reduce these costs.
The OP Stack is Optimism's open-source rollup framework — a modular codebase that any team can use to launch their own OP-Stack-based chain. Chains built on the OP Stack automatically inherit certain capabilities and, if they join the Superchain, share sequencing, messaging, and liquidity fabric with other Superchain members.
Notable Superchain members in 2026:
The Superchain vision is that these chains share liquidity via canonical messaging, share sequencer economics via shared revenue splits, and share governance via the Optimism Collective. In practice, implementation is progressive — full shared sequencing is a work in progress, and revenue sharing between chains and the OP Collective operates on a chain-by-chain agreement basis.
OP has an initial supply of 4.29 billion tokens with 2% annual inflation. As of July 2026, circulating supply sits at approximately 1.6-1.7 billion OP. Distribution:
OP is used primarily for governance participation via the Optimism Collective. Value accrual to OP has been progressive rather than direct — Superchain revenue sharing to the Collective (which OP holders indirectly govern) is one mechanism, but the impact on OP token value has been modest through 2026.
Base has been the biggest single validation of the OP Stack — and also the biggest question mark for OP value accrual. Base has grown to hold multi-billion dollar TVL, consistently leads all L2s by daily active addresses, and has been Coinbase's primary consumer-facing crypto product in 2024-2026.
The relationship: Base runs on the OP Stack and is a Superchain member, but Base is operated by Coinbase and Coinbase captures the vast majority of Base sequencer revenue. A share of that revenue flows to the Optimism Collective under a negotiated agreement, but the specific mechanism and dollar amounts are less direct than "Base fees automatically become OP token value."
This has been the persistent OP value-accrual criticism: Base is successful, Optimism's technology is validated, but OP token holders don't obviously capture the value in a linear way. Progressive improvements to Superchain revenue-sharing mechanisms are the ongoing work of the Optimism Collective governance.
Optimism's 2026 setup is unusual: the Superchain (particularly Base) is one of the most successful stories in crypto's L2 era, but OP token has not captured that success linearly. The strategic question is whether progressive Superchain revenue-sharing mechanisms will produce meaningful OP holder value over the next 1-3 years.
The base case is that Superchain continues to grow via Base and additional chain launches, OP maintains its top-40 position, and progressive value-accrual mechanisms deliver moderate but not spectacular returns to OP holders. This has been the pattern.
The bull case requires either (a) a decisive shift in Superchain revenue-sharing that directly benefits OP token holders, or (b) explosive growth in one or more Superchain member chains that materially expands the ecosystem economics. The bear case is that OP Stack becomes commoditised infrastructure while OP token remains primarily a governance instrument with limited direct economic claim.

Analysis last updated:
Optimism (OP) trades at $0.091679 with a 24-hour volume of $21.65M and a market capitalization of $209.64M. The asset is currently ranked #160 among all tracked cryptocurrencies.
In the last 24 hours, the OP price has fallen +1.91%. On a seven-day window, Optimism has retraced +3.77%, under sustained selling pressure on both windows. Short-term moves are often amplified by liquidity, news flow, and derivatives positioning, so confirm signals across multiple indicators before acting.
Optimism's all-time high of $4.84 was set on March 6, 2024. The current price sits +98.11% below that peak. Distance from the all-time high is a common reference point when evaluating long recoveries and macro support or resistance.
Buying Optimism (OP) is a five-step routine once you have picked the right venue and pair. The steps below mirror what most investors do today.
You can also use the Optimism converter above to estimate how much OP you would get for a given dollar amount before placing the order.
Whether Optimism is a good investment depends on your goals, time horizon, and tolerance for volatility. Like all cryptocurrencies, OP carries real market risk: prices can rise or fall sharply in a day, and past performance is not a reliable indicator of future returns.
