US and EU users who prioritise a spotless security record — no major hack since 2011 — and want a serious pro-grade trading terminal.
Institutions and funds requiring an SEC-registered venue with segregated qualified custody and audited on-chain reserves.
Active spot traders chasing the deepest global liquidity and the widest listing catalogue outside the US perimeter.
Traders who mix spot and on-chain — the Web3 wallet, DEX aggregator and Ethereum L2 X Layer sit inside the same account as CEX pairs.
Long-horizon EU holders who want the oldest continuously-operating exchange (2011) with conservative listings and full MiCA licensing.
Derivatives-first traders who want tighter perp funding and a maker-friendly fee schedule; accept offshore regulatory footprint.

Qtum (pronounced "quantum") is a Layer 1 blockchain that launched in September 2017, combining Bitcoin's UTXO transaction model with an Ethereum-compatible Virtual Machine (EVM). The project was founded by Patrick Dai, Neil Mahi, and Jordan Earls, and is backed by the Singapore-based Qtum Foundation. It was one of the first blockchains to make Ethereum smart contracts run on a UTXO-based ledger — a design decision that influenced several later projects.
The native token is QTUM. It pays gas fees, secures the network through Proof-of-Stake (one of the first major PoS chains), and participates in on-chain governance. QTUM has a capped supply of 107.8 million tokens. At launch, Qtum raised $15.6 million in an ICO, which was one of the larger raises of the 2017 era. The chain has been live in production continuously since 2017, giving it a track record most newer chains lack.
QTUM trades on major centralized exchanges and several decentralized venues. The live price on this page is a volume-weighted average refreshed every 60 seconds.
Key price drivers for QTUM:
The chart above provides live price data. The commentary below is editorial and does not update in real time.
Bitcoin uses an Unspent Transaction Output (UTXO) model: coins are not stored in accounts but in discrete outputs that are consumed and recreated with each transaction. Ethereum uses an account model: balances are stored as state in accounts. Qtum bridges both worlds.
The Account Abstraction Layer (AAL) is the component that makes this possible:
The practical benefit is that Qtum inherits Bitcoin's well-tested UTXO security properties and Simplified Payment Verification (SPV) capability, while running full EVM smart contracts. SPV means Qtum supports lightweight mobile clients that verify transactions without downloading the full blockchain — an important property for mobile-first developing markets.
Qtum switched from Proof-of-Work to Proof-of-Stake at mainnet launch in 2017, making it one of the first major production PoS blockchains predating Ethereum's Merge by five years. The staking model is straightforward: any wallet holding QTUM and left online can stake, earning block rewards proportional to their stake.
Offline staking was added in a 2020 upgrade, allowing cold wallet holders to delegate their balance to an online node without exposing their private key — similar to Ethereum's liquid staking concept but built natively into the protocol.
Qtum has a smaller but active developer ecosystem, with a focus on Asia-Pacific markets. China and South Korea have historically been the largest user bases. The Qtum Foundation has funded dApp development through multiple grant rounds, with DeFi, NFT, and payment applications built on mainnet.
Notable ecosystem developments:
QTUM has a fixed maximum supply of 107,822,406 QTUM. The initial distribution included the ICO sale, team and foundation allocations, and a community reserve. The block reward schedule reduces over time, with staking rewards currently at 0.4 QTUM per block.
QTUM is listed on most major centralized exchanges. It has been continuously tradeable since 2017, which gives it broader exchange coverage than most newer tokens.

Qtum is a proven 2017 chain but faces structural challenges typical of that generation of blockchains.
