What is Story?
Story (ticker IP) is a Layer 1 blockchain purpose-built for intellectual property. Mainnet launched on February 13, 2025, after roughly two years of testnet and protocol design. The chain treats IP — characters, music, video, code, AI training data — as a first-class on-chain asset, with programmable licensing, royalty splits, and remix permissions encoded directly into the protocol.
The project was founded by Jason Zhao (ex-DeepMind, where he worked on AI policy and product) and Seung-Yoon Lee (founder of the serialized-fiction app Radish, sold to Kakao for around $440M in 2021). Story raised $83M in a Series B led by a16z crypto in 2024, with total funding above $140M across rounds. The native token IP pays gas, secures the chain through delegated staking, and votes on governance.

What moves IP on any given day:
- AI and IP-licensing news. Story sits at the intersection of two narratives the market trades hard — generative AI and on-chain IP rights — and headlines from either side tend to move the token.
- Ecosystem app launches. Music platforms, character-licensing apps, and AI-data-licensing dApps building on Story drive most of the chain-specific demand.
- Token unlocks. The Series B was large and a meaningful share of supply is held by early backers and the foundation; unlock dates produce visible distribution-day pressure.
- Major exchange listings and perp-market depth. Binance, OKX, Bybit, and Upbit listings each produced sharp moves around launch.
- Correlation with other 2024-2025 L1s. IP trades alongside Aptos and SUI as a high-beta institutional-narrative L1.

Programmable IP and the Proof-of-Creativity protocol
The core idea behind Story is that intellectual property has historically been illiquid. Licensing a song, a character, or a dataset takes lawyers, contracts, and weeks of back-and-forth. Story turns that into a smart-contract primitive. Every piece of IP becomes an "IP Asset" — an on-chain representation with a deterministic ID, a programmable license, and a royalty-routing graph that handles derivatives automatically.
The protocol stack has three layers worth knowing:
- IP Asset registry. Every IP — a song, a character, an AI model checkpoint — is registered as an ERC-style asset with metadata, ownership, and parent-child links to any work it derives from.
- Programmable IP License (PIL). A standardized license framework that encodes commercial terms, attribution, royalty rates, and remix permissions in code rather than PDF.
- Royalty module. When a derivative work earns revenue, the royalty module automatically splits payments back through the lineage graph to every parent IP up the chain, with no manual reconciliation.
The chain itself is EVM-compatible at the execution layer with a CometBFT-derived consensus engine, which keeps tooling familiar for Solidity teams while letting the protocol add IP-specific opcodes and modules. That choice was deliberate — Story is competing for developers who already know the Ethereum stack.
IP tokenomics and staking
IP is the gas token, the staking asset, and the governance token. Total genesis supply is 1,000,000,000 IP, allocated across the Story Foundation, core contributors, early backers, ecosystem grants, and an airdrop to early testnet users and creator partners.
Numbers worth knowing:
- Genesis supply: 1,000,000,000 IP, with vesting schedules running multiple years for team and investor allocations.
- Inflation: low single-digit annual issuance to fund staking rewards, similar to the Cosmos and Aptos models.
- Staking: delegated proof-of-stake. Holders pick a validator, lock IP, and receive rewards each epoch. APR has run roughly 4-7% in early mainnet, depending on total network stake.
- Airdrop: a portion of genesis supply went to testnet users and partner creators on launch day, which produced the usual airdrop sell-pressure pattern in the first weeks.
- Unlock cliffs: the largest team and investor unlocks fall on a multi-year schedule starting roughly one year after mainnet, so 2026 carries meaningful supply events.

Story vs other 2024-2025 L1s
Story is often grouped with Aptos and SUI as a "VC-backed institutional L1" cohort. The technical and market positioning are quite different.
- Use case focus: Aptos and SUI are general-purpose L1s leaning into DeFi, RWA, and consumer apps. Story is vertical — it solves IP licensing first and treats general DeFi as secondary.
- Execution: Aptos uses the Move language and Block-STM parallel execution. SUI uses Move and an object-centric runtime. Story uses EVM, which is a deliberate trade — slower per-op throughput, but no developer retraining.
- Tokenomics shape: all three had large early-investor allocations and multi-year unlock schedules. Story is the youngest and has the most unlock pressure still ahead.
- Narrative overlap: Story has more in common narratively with Ondo Finance (tokenizing real-world assets) than with general L1s — both are turning off-chain rights into programmable on-chain assets.
- Backers: Aptos and SUI came out of Meta’s Diem effort with FTX and a16z money. Story is a16z-led with Polychain, Endeavor, and Hashed alongside, and a founder team rooted in AI rather than infra.
Ecosystem and partnerships
Story’s pitch only works if creators, AI companies, and IP holders actually use it. The early ecosystem leans into three buckets: creator tooling, AI training-data rights, and music.
- Creator tooling. Apps that let an artist register a character or storyline as an IP Asset and define remix/commercial terms in code. Several of the launch-partner dApps focus on anime, manga, and webtoon-style IP — a natural fit given co-founder Seung-Yoon Lee’s background.
- AI training-data licensing. The protocol is positioned as a way to license datasets to AI labs with automatic royalty payouts to data contributors when the model earns revenue. This is the thesis a16z highlighted in the Series B announcement.
- Music and audio. Several music-rights startups are using Story for splits and derivative-work tracking, which is a use case traditional PROs (ASCAP, BMI) handle slowly and opaquely.
- Stablecoin and DeFi rails. USDC and bridged stablecoins are live on Story to make royalty payouts spendable; basic DEX liquidity launched within weeks of mainnet.
Whether any of these turn into durable on-chain revenue is the open question through 2026. The use case is real and the founding team is credentialed, but the legal interoperability between an on-chain license and existing copyright law is still being tested.
How to buy and stake IP
Buying IP is the same flow as any major L1 listed across tier-1 venues. Self-custody and staking happen through Story-native wallets and validator delegation.

- Complete identity verification. KYC on regulated platforms usually clears in under 10 minutes. If you only plan to interact with Story dApps, a self-custody EVM wallet such as MetaMask or Rabby is enough — Story is EVM-compatible, so existing wallets work after adding the network RPC.
- Fund the account. Bank transfer is the cheapest. Cards are instant but cost 2 to 4% extra. Stablecoin deposits (USDC, USDT) settle in seconds.
- Place the order. IP/USDT has the deepest book on Binance and OKX. For positions over $5,000, a limit order or TWAP reduces slippage during thin Asian-session hours when most IP flow trades.
- Withdraw IP to a self-custody wallet on the Story network, then delegate to a validator from inside a staking dashboard. Rewards accrue each epoch, unstaking has a short lockup, and there is no slashing for delegators on the current protocol.

Risks of holding Story
Story has a sharp narrative and credible backers, but it is a young chain with a young token and an unproven thesis at scale. The risks line up differently from those on a more established L1.
- Heavy unlock schedule. The Series B was large and team plus investor allocations vest on a multi-year schedule. The largest cliffs land in 2026 and beyond, and unlock days have historically pressured comparable VC-backed L1s.
- Thesis dependency. Story’s value sits on the bet that on-chain IP licensing becomes a real category. If creators stay on traditional rails (PROs, IP holding companies, Web2 contracts), the chain has limited reasons to exist.
- Legal interoperability. An on-chain Programmable IP License has not been tested in court at scale. Until it is, enterprise IP holders may be reluctant to commit valuable rights to the system.
- Regulatory exposure. Tokens used to gate licensing rights sit close to the boundary of securities and rights-management law in several jurisdictions. The exact treatment is still being worked out.
- Ecosystem concentration. As of 2025, on-chain TVL and app activity concentrate in a handful of launch-partner dApps. A pull-back from any single major partner would dent perceived traction.
- Competition from EVM L2s. Anyone can launch IP-licensing contracts on Base, Arbitrum, or any L2. Story’s argument is that purpose-built primitives beat general ones, but that is an argument the market is still adjudicating.
