Pump.fun launched in early 2024 and quickly became the dominant memecoin launch platform on Solana. The protocol's core innovation — a public bonding curve with automatic graduation — solved the fair-launch problem and turned memecoin issuance into a one-click product.
How the bonding curve works
Each token launches with a fixed supply (1B) and an algorithmic price curve. The first buyer pays the lowest price; price rises as more SOL enters the curve. The curve is mathematically defined: roughly price = constant × supply² within the curve range. Early buyers benefit from the steep early slope.
Graduation to Raydium
When the bonding curve accumulates ~$69k in market cap (about 80 SOL at typical prices), the token "graduates" — liquidity migrates to Raydium, the bonding curve closes, and the token trades on a normal AMM. ~0.1% of Pump.fun launches graduate; the rest die on the curve.
Why this design matters
- Fair launch — No pre-mine, no insider rounds. Everyone starts on the curve.
- Built-in liquidity — LP forms automatically without team coordination.
- Public price discovery — The bonding curve is transparent; everyone sees the same price.
- Algorithmic exit — Sellers can always exit on the curve before graduation.
Where the design breaks
- Bot snipers — Buy in the first block, dominate early upside.
- Insider coordination — Devs can pre-fund wallets to buy across multiple addresses (bundles).
- Pump-and-dump mechanics — Most tokens are designed to die after the dev exit.
- No utility post-graduation — Tokens that graduate often have nothing to do besides be traded.
How to use the curve as a trader
- Filter for tokens approaching graduation ($50k+ market cap) — graduation often triggers a pump.
- Check the dev's history before buying — past rugs are an instant skip.
- Verify no bundle buys in the first blocks.
- Take initial profits aggressively; most "graduates" eventually dump.
The economics of Pump.fun itself
Pump.fun charges a 1% fee on every trade, paid to the platform. With thousands of tokens trading daily, this generated $400M+ in protocol revenue in 2024–2025. Pump.fun has remained the most-revenue-generating consumer crypto product of the cycle by a wide margin.
