On-chain data is the most powerful retail edge in crypto. Every transaction is public. The skill is knowing what to look at — and what to ignore. Three tools cover most of what matters.
Etherscan: the universal Ethereum (and EVM) explorer
Every Ethereum, L2, BNB, Polygon, Avalanche transaction can be inspected on Etherscan-style explorers. Use it to verify contract addresses, read token holder distributions, check approval lists, and trace transactions. The Token Approval Checker and Phishing Tag are essential safety features.
Solscan: Etherscan for Solana
Solscan and the newer Solana FM provide block-level visibility on Solana. Account inspection, NFT verification, program (smart contract) interactions, and a strong DeFi label set. Pair with Birdeye for memecoin token analytics.
Arkham: entity-tagged intelligence
Arkham aggregates on-chain data and tags addresses to known entities — funds, exchanges, market makers, specific founders. Free tier gives entity tracking; paid tier adds alerts and bulk address management. The standout differentiator vs. Etherscan: who, not just what.
What to look for
- Token holder distribution — Top 10 wallets percentage. Above 50% concentration is risky; sometimes the dev still holds.
- Liquidity locks — Check Unicrypt, Pinksale, or contract code for time-locked or burned LP tokens.
- Wallet activity patterns — Multiple addresses funded by the same source, transacting together, are often coordinated.
- Funding source — Trace a new token's initial liquidity. Funded from a known exchange? From a fresh wallet via Tornado? Each tells a story.
- Token approvals — Active approvals on your wallet that you do not recognise are an immediate revoke priority.
Common on-chain patterns and what they mean
- Bundle buys at launch — Multiple wallets funded by a single source buy in the first block. Often the dev front-running retail.
- Concentration unwinding — Top wallet starts sending small amounts to fresh wallets. Often distribution before a dump.
- Exchange inflows from a treasury wallet — Project moving funds to a CEX. Often precedes a sale.
- Smart money buying — Wallets associated with profitable past trades accumulating a new token. Higher signal than influencer mentions.
Tools that build on these
Nansen and Arkham for smart-money tracking. DefiLlama for TVL and protocol fee data. Dune Analytics for custom queries. Token Terminal for protocol financials. GMGN, DexScreener, Photon for memecoin-specific on-chain signals.
