Bitcoin SV (BSV) is a cryptocurrency that came out of a hard fork from Bitcoin Cash on November 15, 2018. The "SV" stands for "Satoshi Vision," and the entire pitch of the chain is that it restores the original Bitcoin protocol that Satoshi Nakamoto wrote in 2009. Whether that pitch matches reality is one of the most argued questions in crypto, and it sits behind almost every BSV headline.
BSV kept Bitcoin’s 21 million supply cap, the 10-minute block target, and SHA-256 mining. What it changed is the block size, which is the whole point of the chain. BSV blocks can hold gigabytes of data, the largest of any major proof-of-work network. The chain is built around bulk on-chain data, enterprise applications, and the claim that scaling should happen on layer 1 rather than through layer-2 networks like Lightning.
BSV trades against the US dollar, USDT, and BTC on a smaller set of exchanges than most top-100 coins. The live data on this page refreshes every 60 seconds and pulls from a multi-venue feed weighted by liquidity. The reference quote in the price card is the volume-weighted average across the deepest order books that still list BSV.
What actually moves BSV price on a given week:

BSV exists because Bitcoin Cash itself hard-forked in November 2018. The split came down to a disagreement between two camps inside the BCH community. Bitcoin ABC, led by developers around Amaury Séchet, wanted to keep block sizes moderate and add features like canonical transaction ordering. Bitcoin SV, backed by Craig Wright and billionaire Calvin Ayre through nChain and CoinGeek, wanted much bigger blocks (initially 128 MB, then unlimited) and a "lock the protocol" approach that supposedly returned to Satoshi’s 2009 design.
A hash war broke out around the fork. Both sides spent millions on mining power trying to produce the longer chain. The market sided with BCH almost immediately. Within weeks, BCH had higher liquidity, more wallet support, and a more recognizable brand. BSV ended up as the smaller chain, and the gap has widened since.
Concrete differences as of 2025:
For a deeper look at the other side of the split, see our Bitcoin Cash overview.
BSV cannot be discussed honestly without addressing Craig Wright. Wright has claimed since 2015 that he is Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonymous creator of Bitcoin. That claim is the marketing core of BSV; the chain’s name, its "lock the protocol" philosophy, and its pitch to enterprises all rest on the assumption that BSV represents the original vision of Bitcoin’s creator.
The legal record now contradicts the claim. In March 2024, the UK High Court ruled in COPA v Wright that Craig Wright is not Satoshi Nakamoto, did not write the Bitcoin white paper, and did not create the Bitcoin system. The judge described Wright’s evidence as forged on a "grand scale." Wright was later barred from filing similar claims and was found in contempt of court for breaching that order. This is not opinion or community consensus; it is a court finding.
For BSV holders this matters in two ways. First, lawsuits Wright filed against Bitcoin developers, exchanges, and BCH supporters were a constant headline risk for years; most have now been dismissed or barred. Second, the "BSV is the real Bitcoin" pitch has lost the legal cover it relied on. The chain still has supporters and a working network, but the founder narrative has changed permanently.
The single most important practical fact about BSV is its narrow exchange footprint. In April 2019, Binance, Kraken, and ShapeShift all delisted BSV within days of each other. The trigger was Wright threatening lawsuits against Twitter users and journalists who said he was not Satoshi. Other platforms followed over the next few years.
What is left as of 2025:
For a buyer this means more friction, higher slippage on size, and fewer regulated venues. For long-term holders it means custody risk concentrates in a smaller pool of platforms, several of which are not subject to the same oversight as Binance or Coinbase.
Buying BSV in 2025 is harder than buying BTC, BCH, or any top-20 coin. The flow itself is the same; the constraint is finding a platform that lists it.
BSV uses a legacy Bitcoin address format (starting with "1" for P2PKH). Sending BSV to a BTC or BCH address is a common way to lose coins because the formats can look similar at a glance. Always verify the wallet you are sending to actually supports BSV before confirming.
BSV concentrates several risks that most top-100 coins do not carry to the same degree. Some are technical, most are structural and legal.
