A seed phrase is the master key to your crypto. Everyone who has lost a meaningful amount has either lost the phrase or had it stolen. Both outcomes are preventable with thirty minutes of work.
Paper backup: the minimum baseline
Hand-write the 12 or 24 words on the card that came with your wallet, or on archival paper. Use ink that does not fade. Store the card in a safe place where casual visitors cannot find it. Paper survives most environments but burns, soaks, and gets thrown out in moves.
Metal backup: the upgrade
For anything beyond a few hundred dollars, upgrade to a steel plate. Brands like Cryptosteel, Billfodl, SafePal Cypher, and Coldcard SeedPlate resist fire, water, electromagnetic damage, and decades of storage. A DIY version (stainless washers + a center punch) costs $15 and works.
Splitting and geographically distributing
A common pattern: two complete metal backups stored in two different physical locations (home + safe-deposit box, or home + family member's house). The single biggest cause of seed loss is a single point of failure — fire, flood, theft. Two locations remove that.
Multisig vs single seed

What never to do
- Photograph the phrase. Cloud-synced photos leak.
- Type it into a password manager note. Cloud-synced notes leak.
- Email it to yourself. Email accounts get hacked.
- Store it on a "secure" USB drive without offline backup. Drives die.
- Share with a partner you cannot fully trust without a coordinated plan.
Inheritance planning
